The Johnny Raw Studio is owned by Rene Ahoud, a dedicated, experienced and practical perfectionistic – composer, producer, engineer with a background in engineering (theatre, live, studio and audio post), music (composer, producer. musician) and multimedia (engineering, recording and editing – image&sound.
I am currently working on INTERFERENCE. Interference is an interactive spacious 3D music event / soundwalk that will occur on nine “spacious locations in Amsterdam”.
The result will be something in between a sound walk, a computer-game, a soundtrack and a shared listening experience.

City Limits is a 3D Soundwalk in the Tuinen van West area in which the emphasis shifts towards awareness of oneself in time and space, and focus on small details in a rural urban area. One is listening to City Limits while walking a specific route through the rural urban area “de Tuinen van West” (Amsterdam Nieuw-West). The soundwalk will take some 1.5 hours.
The soundwalk is played using ECHOES, a GPS triggered app that can be freely downloaded. Send an email to soundwalk@johnnyraw.com and you will receive a link to the content as well as further instructions.
The soundwalk consists of a 3D soundspace in which, a soundscape constructed out of processed field recording, poetry and historic and cultural storytelling are presented. All field-recordings, made using contact mic’s, hydrophones and binaural mic’s, originate from the surrounding area and will merge with the, sometimes audible presence of, ambient noise. Sounds that can not be heard in daily life are shapeshifted in an adventurous soundscape. While walking one will “trigger and walk through different audio objects”.
The Johnny Raw Studio recently conceptualized 3 Shades of Black. Three multimedia shorts as contribution to an evening of Gothic inspiration in Amsterdam’s FOAM in remembrance of Lord Byron’s ghost story competition, which took place some 200 years ago.
On the 13th of november a screening of Sunset Contract took place in Eye in Amsterdam where it was enthusiastically received by an audience of some 300 people, crew, cast and industry professionals. Audio post production of this feature film (as well as music and sound design) took place in the Johnny Raw studio which has a mix down area of some 30m2. This is relatively small as compared to Eye’s cinema 1 which measures 400m2.
We were very happy the mix, partly stereo and partly 5.1 surround, translated very well to this large theatre. This makes the Johnny Raw Studio very attractive for “non-Hollywood budget productions”, both feature film and documentary.

In cooperation with “Achterland “, the Johnny Raw Studio is working on a series of Multimedia installations that concern “past presence in reclaimed land”. The exact exhibition format has yet to be defined but will definitely include video, sound, music and poetry. Exhibition will, apart from various musea in Flevoland” take place in public space. The first one concerns the former island of Schokland nowadays embedded in the Noordoostpolder. Schokland was an elongated strip of peat land which ceased to be an island when the Noordoostpolder was reclaimed from the sea in 1942 (read on….). Achterland aims to build bridges between society and literature thus making literature more accessible by creating a context a listener or reader can (more) easily relate to. To be continued…
The Johnny Raw Studio recently finalized the soundtrack for Sunset Contract, an Indiepend Pictures feature film, currently entering the film festival circuit before its commercial release. It tells the story of successful business man Brad, who runs into trouble when he meets the mysterious Ms Eve at his recently-acquired villa. There, he’s confronted with a cryptic contract he can’t remember agreeing to. When his girlfriend Mary suddenly appears, things spiral out of control while the sun sets and time runs out.
Johnny Raw worked on the audio post production, sound design and music. The music includes vocal parts by Kiki Holshuijsen and violin by James Ellis.
